Spring 2022 Diary: Date A Live has justified its existence to me (Last updated 11th April)

Entry #03: Date A Live has justified its existence to me (11th April) I do not like 'Date A Live'. I think it's a harem show that is outdated and past its prime. It uses the trite formula of "collect girls like you would collect Pokemon". Granted while its one of the earlier pioneers of that genre, the sheer influx of Isekai shows that adhere to those tropes like a bible, has made the bible itself obsolete; A relic of a past that has been translated to death, and would be soon replaced with fresher, more respectful harem tropes. However regardless of all its flaws, 'Date A Live' has "justified its existence" to me. That phrase means a great deal in my mind. It surpasses the mere idea of just being good. For example, last season I watched a show called 'My Dress-up Darling'. I finished all of it, thought that Marin is super cute, thought the animation was super crisp and thought that that show was in all fairness, a pretty good show. Howev...

Ousama Ranking: More than just Fluff

Image
Ousama Ranking is a show that wears its heart on its sleeves. Episode 1 and 2 has no doubt tugged onto everyone's heartstrings. The struggles of Bojji and Kage are simple and yet instantly palpable. The blob-like designs and pastel colors are childish and yet infinitely expressive. Both elements lend to incredible scenes where every emotion are painted in the most beautiful way possible, so much so that you may not even need context for you to "feel it".  It is with these type of expectations did my heart gleefully awaited episode 3. But what I was left with when I finished the episode was a profound respect not for the animators of the show, but for the scriptwriters. You see, for a show that thus far had such a simple story, what was brought onto the table was a script that was far more complex and masterful than it deserved to be. And what I am talking about is it's ability to play with expectations and write multi-faceted characters. Writing a good mystery Queen H...

Casual August: Realist Hero Is Actually Good?! (Last updated: 4st Aug)

So I'm going to start a new kind of blog separate from my usual topic-based analysis. I've realized that while I am quite happy being able to craft full essays out for a wide variety of shows, I am still somewhat limited. In every show and every episode, I often have many opinions, likes and dislikes but more often than not, I don't deem it substantial enough for a full analysis. However, I think that itself has begun to limit or censor some of the opinions I have; As if saying: I can only write or express things that needs to be public-worthy. With this mindset, this blog has already diverted from some of my original vision for it: A blog that is a comfortable place where I can jot down and gather various feelings I have. And it also runs counter to my personal philosophy: Any feelings you have of a show, no matter how basic it is, is worthy to be considered and looked at. That is, I don't want an environment where we can only talk about "deep shows" and on...

The rom-com manga which I really, really, really, really, really love

Image
So recently there is this manga that is fucking great and that I look forward to reading every week cause I really, really, really, really, really love it. Here is some of the reasons why: I love every single one of the girls from the tops of their heads to the tips of their toenails and I love Kusuri-senpai’s energetic innocence and I love the way Shizuka-chan is like a cute little animal and I love Hakari’s modest grace and I love the way Hahari-san completely falls apart around cute things and I love how Mei-san is both sweet and overwhelmingly competent as a maid and I love the way Kurumi makes everything she eats look delicious and I love the way Karane is a tsundere and I love the way Kusuri-senpai gets so single-minded in her love of developing drugs and I love Nano’s beautifully glossy silver hair that flows behind her and I love the way Iku stoically sticks it out against all the odds and I love how Shizuka-chan’s timidity makes me want to protect her and I love the way Hakari...
